FROM SCREEN TO STREET
TAKING THE PROGRESS FITNESS BRAND FROM AN IDEA TO A PHYSICAL SPACE.
There is a moment in every branding project when the identity stops existing only on a screen and becomes part of the real world.
For Progress Fitness, that moment came when the new branding was installed at its gym in Stockton Heath, Warrington.
What began with questions, strategy and rough sketches became a complete visual identity—and then a physical sign experienced by members every time they enter the space.
This is how the Progress brand moved from screen to street.
THE BRAND BEHIND THE SIGN
Progress Fitness already had passionate coaches, a loyal community and a clear vision for the future.
The challenge wasn’t creating something from nothing. It was developing a brand identity that properly represented what the business had already become—and gave it room to keep progressing.
The new identity needed to feel:
APPROACHABLE.
PROGRESSIVE.
CREDIBLE.
It had to communicate expertise without becoming intimidating, capture the energy of the gym and work consistently across digital platforms, printed material, clothing, social media and the physical environment.
The aim was never simply to design a new fitness logo.
It was to create a recognisable brand system built around the idea of progress.
BEFORE THE DESIGN CAME THE DIRECTION
A strong brand identity doesn’t begin in Illustrator.
Before exploring logos, colours or typography, we needed to understand the business, its members and the space it wanted to occupy within the local fitness market.
The strategy established a central idea:
PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION.
Progress Fitness isn’t about arriving with perfect form, complete confidence or years of experience. It is about being willing to begin, learn and improve.
That idea shaped the positioning, personality and visual direction of the brand. It gave every design decision a reason—and created a clear standard against which those decisions could be judged.
BUILDING THE PROGRESS SYMBOL
The Progress symbol was developed to represent movement, improvement and the process of working towards better form.
Its imperfect construction is intentional.
Rather than presenting progress as something finished or flawless, the symbol captures the desire to develop, learn and move forward. The form feels active and slightly unconventional while remaining bold enough to work as an identifiable gym logo.
The forward movement within the mark reflects the mindset at the heart of Progress Fitness: improvement is continuous.
The symbol was then combined with a confident wordmark to create a logo capable of working across signage, clothing, social content, printed materials and digital applications.
THE LOGO WAS JUST THE START
A logo alone cannot create a recognisable brand.
The wider Progress visual identity brought together typography, colour, photography, messaging and graphic elements to build a consistent experience.
The bold red, black and white palette gives the brand energy, confidence and visibility. Supporting colours, including peppermint, provide flexibility without weakening recognition.
The typography feels modern and direct, while the photography focuses on real effort, movement and human progress rather than unrealistic ideas of perfection.
Together, these elements created an identity that could extend far beyond the original logo.
FROM CONCEPT TO APPLICATION
Throughout the design process, the Progress identity was tested across realistic applications.
These included:
Social media content
Posters and promotional material
Clothing and merchandise
Shaker bottles and accessories
Outdoor advertising
Brand guidelines
Interior and exterior signage
Testing the brand in context helped ensure that it remained clear, distinctive and recognisable at different sizes and across different environments.
The identity needed to work just as effectively on a small social media icon as it did across a large physical sign.
FROM SCREEN
Before production, the signage existed as a digital visual.
Mockups allowed us to assess the scale, placement and impact of the Progress identity within a real environment. They helped demonstrate how the branding could transform the space before anything was manufactured or installed.
But a mockup is still only a prediction.
The real test comes when the identity leaves the presentation and enters the world it was designed for.
TO STREET
The installed Progress Fitness signage brought the identity into its most important environment: the gym itself.
The bold typography and red Progress symbol create a clear, confident presence from the street. The design feels distinctive without becoming disconnected from the approachable personality behind the business.
It doesn’t simply identify the building.
It introduces the brand, communicates its energy and begins shaping the customer experience before anyone walks through the door.
For a local business, physical signage is one of the most visible expressions of its identity. It needs to be recognisable from a distance, legible in changing conditions and consistent with everything customers have already seen online.
The finished Progress sign achieves that connection between digital and physical branding.
WHY PHYSICAL BRANDING MATTERS
Customers don’t experience a brand in one place.
They may first discover a business through social media, visit its website, see a poster, pass its premises and eventually interact with the team.
Every one of those moments contributes to their perception of the business.
When the visual identity changes dramatically between platforms, recognition is lost. When every touchpoint feels connected, the business appears more established, considered and trustworthy.
For Progress Fitness, the signage connects the physical location in Stockton Heath with the wider identity used online, in print and throughout the gym.
It turns branding from something people see into something they experience.
MORE THAN A SIGN
Seeing a brand move from an early sketch to a permanent physical application is always significant.
The installed signage represents the full journey behind the identity:
Understanding the business.
Defining its position.
Exploring the idea.
Developing the symbol.
Building the visual system.
Applying it consistently.
Bringing it into the real world.
The final result may look simple, but it is supported by every strategic and creative decision that came before it.
BUILT FOR THE REAL WORLD
Good branding should never exist only inside a presentation.
It needs to survive different sizes, materials, platforms and environments while remaining recognisable and true to the business behind it.
The Progress Fitness identity was designed to do exactly that.
From the first strategy session to the finished signage in Stockton Heath, every stage was focused on creating something distinctive, relevant and capable of growing with the business.
FROM SCREEN TO STREET.
FROM AN IDEA TO AN IDENTITY.
FROM A LOGO TO A BRAND.
